Southend Council are looking to appoint an experienced full time, permanent Education Welfare Officer.

Within this position, hybrid working opportunities are available, however a flexible approach is needed as you will be required to be on site and to travel around the city.

Within this role, you will be securing and maintaining an effective educational provision for children and young people who have offended and or are at risk of offending. The main responsibilities will be to help to improve and maintain school attendance in line with objectives in the Children and Young People's Plan and requirements of the Youth Justice Board.
You will be required to undertake a full needs assessment of referred children and young people to ensure that an appropriate package of support is in place, as well as holding a caseload. You will ensure that all stakeholders are aware of the current educational profile and status of any referred child or young person, adopting a multi-professional approach to reduce any barriers to education, achievement and social inclusion. You will have the skill and expertise to advise and support schools in the development of effective behaviour management strategies to reduce the risk of exclusion and to challenge inappropriate exclusions, as well as challenge schools appropriately, where there are barriers to engagement and access to learning and to act as an advocate for referred children and young people.

What you'll need to succeed
To be successful in this position, you must have previous experience within SEND, youth justice or education. You will have experience of working along side schools, parents/carers, case management, along with skills in working with young people presenting challenging behaviour.
There will be a need for excellent communication skills and a keen eye for detail within record keeping and report writing.
