Building Physics Engineer

£32,000 to £43,000 per annum | South East | Date posted 24 Feb 2023
Our client, a Building Design Practice, are looking for an experienced, motivated dynamic individual, with a proven background in Building Physics engineering. The role will involve working on numerous projects, client communication, building physics reporting, and supporting the wider team. The ideal candidate must have the ability to understand the bigger picture and the development aims of the business.

You will have a strong propensity to work with others and should be conscientious and committed. This role will be based in Epsom but presents the opportunity to join a national delivery team and work with designers all across the UK and internationally through our Global Technical Centre.

This opportunity will involve working as part of a national practice of Building Design professionals delivering engineering design solutions to clients across the UK. The Building Design practice work on projects across all of our focus markets, including Aviation, Cities & Development, Education, Energy, Defence and Transportation. This role will encompass a multi-sector experience, but expertise from working within the Defence, Education or Aviation sectors would be a benefit.

Responsibilities:
  • The role requires a blend/mix of Mechanical Building Services & Building Physics skills.
  • Producing dynamic thermal models using IES VE software.
  • Producing PART L & EPC reports, Thermal Comfort Reports, daylight analysis, LZC reports, etc.
  • Act as Project Leader on selected projects.
  • Work as part of a larger team on certain projects.
  • Contribute towards raising & promoting the level of technical excellence.
  • Help generate repeat business through customer care of existing clients.
  • Working closely with others in a team environment to achieve a common goal.
  • Managing elements of project delivery and an understanding of budget costings.
  • Reviewing progress, inc. reporting any anomalies and changes of scope to the line manager.
  • Help & assist with technical development of junior staff.

Requirements:
  • Knowledge of British and European Standards, Building Regulations documents etc.
  • Confident with passive building design from both an environmental and energy efficiency perspective, Proven experience within a similar role.
  • Sustainability strategies.
  • Energy strategies.
  • Building Regulations Part L assessments using NHER / Elmhurst and IES.
  • Energy modelling and assessment.
  • Dynamic modelling for thermal comfort assessments and overheating risk assessments.
  • Renewable energy feasibility studies.
  • Daylight analysis.
  • Embodied carbon assessments – not essential but beneficial.
  • Whole life carbon appraisals – not essential but beneficial.
  • Circular economy strategies and low carbon materials – not essential but beneficial BREEAM, WELL AP – not essential but beneficial.

Desirable Experience -
  • High-level understanding of thermal modeling using IES VE Dynamic Simulation Software, and additional software.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in building physics engineering.
  • Degree qualified – mechanical or building physics.
  • Professional Membership (CIBSE, IET, IMechE).
  • Low Carbon Energy Assessor.
  • Energy and sustainability strategy reports for planning applications.
  • Capable of accurate work under pressure and able to work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Interested in developing design tools to enable more efficient and accurate production of project deliverables.
  • Wider knowledge of other disciplines highly desirable.
  • Able to gain security clearance if required.

To undertake an appropriate level of financial management responsibility and control by -
  • Ensuring projects are kept within time/cost limits as stated at briefing meetings.
  • Completing time/expense sheets as required.

To undertake an appropriate level of business development by -
  • Making a positive contribution on how image and efficiency of the company can be improved.
  • Acting as an ambassador for the company.
