Clerk of Works

Following the imminent retirement of the Current Clerk of works on 1st June 2021 after 23 years in post, the Dalton Estate are looking to recruit a full-time replacement, to manage the Maintenance of the extensive mixed Agricultural, Residential and Commercial portfolio of the Traditional Rural Estate, owned by Lord Hotham and his family. This is a challenging and interesting role, with the successful candidate required to live on the Estate.

Job Description

The successful applicant will have responsibility for the delivery of Repair and maintenance program to a budgeted and planned approach, across the Estate, working closely with the Agent and other members of the Estate Office team. There will be a requirement to be computer literate to a good level, using excel spreadsheets and budgeting and reporting on a monthly basis.  The successful applicant will be responsible for a large number of Traditional Buildings on the Estate and depending on qualifications and experience may well be required to deliver the conversion of existing buildings into Residential or other alternative uses. The properties range from Listed Properties like South Dalton Hall to Farm buildings and everything between, the majority of properties being of Traditional brick and Yorkshire pantile construction, there are x Listed Buildings.  

Within the Current Maintenance Team, the Estate directly employs, a site Foreman, 2 Joiners, 4 Builders and a Plumber, any work that cannot be dealt with inhouse is carried out by local self-employed Tradesmen and Contracting Companies, there is a fully equipped joiners shop and Builders Yard where the department is based.

The successful applicant will need to have existing hands-on knowledge and experience of managing heritage property repairs and a workforce, they will need knowledge and ability to use computer systems and be prepared to upgrade, deliver and instigate new systems for Health and Safety CDM Regulations, Training and compliance, and general efficiency where this is necessary. Organisational and efficiency will be important qualities as well as technical building knowledge, financial acumen and the ability to be patient and communicate effectively with others, whilst at the same time having attention to detail and the drive to see genuine improvement of the Estate properties.

There are a number of Private Water Supplies on the Estate, which are managed by the Clerk of Works, as well as the ongoing replacement of septic Tanks and electrical upgrades, and other refurbishments  and improvements as compliance requires.

The roll is challenging with plenty of variety, but rewarding, for someone who is self-motivated and innovative and interested in, with an appreciation of traditional buildings, and how they can be adapted and upgraded in-line with modern energy and EPC ratings.

It will be a requirement to be capable of acting as the Principal Designer and Principal Contractor.  Evidence of this competence by Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card, at a Managerial/professional level would be helpful.

Accommodation

The successful candidate will be required to live in the Estate Office House, adjoining the Estate Office in South Dalton, on a Service occupancy agreement. This is an attractive 4 bedroom house, with Oil Fired Central Heating and an  extensive and well maintained Garden  , no Rent  or costs for water and sewage will be charged but the occupier will be required  to pay the Council tax .

Professional Subscriptions

Membership of a Professional body would be an advantage, and annual subscriptions will be paid by the Estate.

Renumeration

A Salary Range of £30,000 to £40,000 pa is offered, depending on the successful candidate’s experience, this is paid monthly in arrears.

Pension

After a qualifying period, membership of the Estate Group personal Pension will be Offered, the employer pays 5 ½ % of salary into the scheme.

Life Assurance

During employment life assurance of 3x salary will be offered.

Vehicle

An open back Mitsubishi Truck will be provided for work purposes, and a clean driving licence is required.

Holiday

23 days Holiday plus Bank holidays and weekends, the successful candidate will be expected to provide some emergency cover out of hours whilst on the Estate.
